Getting Started in The Carcass

From Steam install to a stable first colony before the parasites notice you.

Getting Started

Starting The Carcass feels like booting a forbidden mainframe inside a rib cage. You are not building a cute farm—you are carving survival infrastructure from a dead god’s organs while strangers, parasites, and your own hunger press in. This guide takes you from Steam install through your first productive Pulses without wasting the demo or early full-game hours.

Install the game

  1. Open the Steam store page for The Carcass or the free demo if you want to try before buying.
  2. Verify Windows 10+ and at least 4 GB RAM (8 GB recommended for large colonies later).
  3. Launch with keyboard ready—no mouse required.

Full release date is 11 August 2026. Demo progress does not carry over; use it to learn terminal flow.

Survive the intro

The opening cinematic dumps lore fast. After the 2.0 update:

  • SPACE or ENTER advances at four marked [SPACE/ENTER] Continue... pauses so you can read.
  • ESC skips the entire intro instantly if you replay.

Do not rush past the first pause on a virgin run—the text explains why you are inside the carcass and sets tone for later endings.

First terminal session

When you gain control, type commands exactly as the tutorial suggests. If you forget a verb, open our keyboard commands page or the command lookup tool.

Critical early commands:

CommandRole
nextEnds the Pulse—advances time
harvestGathers regional resources; consumes 1 Pulse
Region navigationMove between anatomy zones when unlocked

Read Pulse system immediately—Steam players reported confusion until 2.0 labeled Pulse consumption.

First economic goals

Your colony needs biomass (food), calcium (structure), bile (industry), and neurons (research). Early demo bottlenecks are food and calcium.

  1. Harvest in the safest shown zone until the turn report lists positive biomass.
  2. Build a Nutrient Vat when the build menu unlocks—see buildings guide.
  3. Add a Bone Quarry before expanding luxury research.
  4. Assign citizens with matching traits—citizens guide.

If biomass flatlines, do not research combat yet. Fix income first.

Accept or reject strangers

Events offer shelter to dying travelers. Helping can grant allies or hidden traits; refusing may avoid traitors. There is no universal safe answer—see factions guide for diplomacy framing.

First ten Pulses checklist

  • Read intro or skip consciously
  • Complete tutorial prompts
  • Harvest with Pulse reports understood
  • One Nutrient Vat online
  • One Bone Quarry online
  • Morale stable (citizens)
  • One research pick aligned with research tier list
  • Bookmark controls hub

When the demo ends

Demo scope covers terminal feel, early colony loop, and sample events—not all nine endings or thirty species. Wishlist the full game if the ASCII aesthetic and dread land. Continue on this wiki with resource management and endings overview.

Common beginner mistakes

Spamming next without harvesting starves the colony.

Building before reading Pulse cost labels in high-danger harvest zones kills workers.

Ignoring morale triggers internal factions faster than external parasites.

Skipping accessibility settings when text feels small—open terminal settings and enlarge fonts.

Welcome inside the carcass. It remembers everything that follows.

Demo milestone targets

Aim for stable biomass by Pulse 10, first research unlock by Pulse 15, and one allied species before quitting the demo.

Closing tips for newcomers

Pulse 10 food stable, mid-demo ally, never skip turn reports.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I play demo or full game first?

Demo if unsure about keyboard-only ASCII play. Full game if you already love colony sims and Cultist Simulator-style menus.

How long is the intro?

Several minutes with pauses after 2.0. ESC skips entirely.

Can I save anytime?

Yes on non-Ironman modes per Steam feature list. Ironman is one save, no reload scumming.
