Map and Regions

The world of The Carcass is not a flat strategy map—it is the anatomy of a dead cosmic god rendered as ASCII regions. Bone corridors connect chambers; rotting organs become harvest zones; marrow tunnels hide combat expeditions. After the 2.0 update, region navigation loads dynamically from a data-driven Region system with localized descriptions instead of hardcoded lists. This guide teaches exploration rhythm, danger labels, and achievement hunting across the carcass.

How region navigation works

From the terminal you move between regions—discrete areas with their own harvest tables, event pools, and danger ratings. Navigation commands (see keyboard commands) let you inspect a region before committing workers. Key habits:

  1. Scout prose — region descriptions now localize cleanly; read danger hints added in 2.0
  2. Harvest deliberately — high-danger zones show explicit Pulse cost in menus
  3. Return to hub chambers — stockpile biomass before pushing deeper

Mis-clicks hurt more than parasites early game because worker loss is permanent on Ironman.

Region types you will meet

Zone flavorTypical yieldsRisk profile
Soft tissue / nutrient bedsBiomass, bileModerate; famine recovery
Bone highwaysCalcium, structureLower combat, higher build value
Marrow depthsCombat loot, neuronsWarriors required—see combat guide
Forgotten chambersEvents, relic hooksStory flags; may spike parasites
Legendary locationsUnique lore, achievementsGated by exploration stats

Exact names vary by run seed and NG+ memory; treat the table as behavioral, not a spoiler list.

Harvest depth and awareness

Marketing emphasizes the god becomes aware of you as you dig deeper. Mechanically, deeper harvests can unlock sharper event text and ending prerequisites. That does not mean rush depth—shallow stable loops teach Pulse economy first. Mid-game, align depth pushes with mutation picks from mutations tier list.

Legendary locations and achievements

Steam tracks exploration aggressively. Notable achievement families include:

  • Cartographer / World Mapper — territory milestones
  • Legendary Pilgrim — find legendary locations (demo lists seven as a benchmark)
  • Regional Master — visit every region of the carcass

Plan exploration Pulses alongside diplomacy so you are not at war on three fronts while hunting landmarks. Use command lookup to filter navigation verbs if you forget syntax mid-run.

Regions and localization

Patch 2.0 moved region/location strings into data files so 29 language packs stay consistent. If a region name looks wrong in your language, verify game files updated—wiki patch notes document the pass. Wiki offers EN/FR/DE/ES; the game itself supports thirty Steam interface languages.

Region planning by difficulty

Merciful / Normal: explore one new region per stable food cycle; do not chain harvests in red zones until warriors exist.

Hard / Extinction: treat travel as resource spend—every Pulse without net biomass gain is a loss.

Ironman: map journal mandatory; losing a scout team in marrow ends runs.

Demo map scope

Demo regions teach navigation and a sample legendary hook but omit the full release continent. Expect the full game to add lanes tied to thirty species—read release info before planning completionist routes.

The map is the carcass; the carcass is the map. Learn its arteries before the god learns your name.

Exploration Pulse budget

Allocate one in five Pulses to pure exploration until Regional Master progress stalls—trade can wait, famine cannot.

Closing tips for cartographers

Screenshot region names when hunting Regional Master. NG+ shuffles prose but keeps achievement counters.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common questions.

Does the demo include all regions?

No. Full release expands the region web significantly beyond demo samples.

How do I see Pulse cost before harvest?

Post-2.0 harvest menus label costs in normal and high-danger zones—read before confirming.

Do regions reset in NG+?

Layout and events can shift with carried memory; achievement progress rules vary—check in-game achievement text.
