The Carcass Pulse System Explained

Only two commands advance time—learn them before the carcass advances without you.

Pulse System

The Pulse is The Carcass’s turn clock. One Pulse represents a beat of time inside the dead god—seasons of digestion, diplomacy, and decay. Misunderstanding Pulses was the top beginner complaint on Steam before the 2.0 update clarified labels. This guide explains exactly what advances time, what is free, and how to read turn reports so you never lose a colony to confusion rather than parasites.

Core rule (post-2.0)

Only next and harvest consume a Pulse. All other menu actions—building placement, research selection, citizen assignment, diplomacy screens—are free until you explicitly end the turn with next or harvest in a zone.

If research completed “by itself,” you likely ended a Pulse unknowingly via harvest or stacked next commands. Watch the terminal footer after every action.

Command breakdown

next

Ends the current Pulse without harvesting. Time advances, events fire, consumption ticks, parasites may act. Use when your economy is stocked and you want to progress story or production timers without risking harvest danger.

harvest

Extracts resources from the active region and consumes 1 Pulse. The game prints:

[PULSE CONSUMED] Harvesting advances time by 1 Pulse

Followed by a mini turn report listing biomass, calcium, bile, neuron deltas. High-danger zones show explicit Pulse cost in the harvest menu—do not enter them undermanned.

Reading turn reports

Turn reports are your spreadsheet. Check them every Pulse:

  1. Biomass — negative means famine incoming.
  2. Calcium — blocks construction if depleted.
  3. Morale indicators — often buried in event text; cross-check citizens guide.
  4. Research progress — confirms whether labs finished this Pulse.

Players who wanted “inputs/outputs per Pulse” should treat this report as mandatory reading—PiqFocus added it precisely for that feedback.

Planning Pulses

Early game: harvest almost every Pulse until biomass stabilizes, then alternate harvest/next to sync events.

Mid game: batch free actions (assign jobs, queue builds, talk to factions) then single next to execute.

Late game: military crises may force harvests in dangerous zones—budget warriors and mutations (combat guide).

Free action examples

These do not spend Pulses by themselves:

  • Navigating menus and reading codex entries
  • Placing buildings if already unlocked (costs resources, not time)
  • Choosing research projects (completion still ticks on Pulse advance)
  • Diplomatic negotiations until an event resolves on time advance

When unsure, perform one action and verify the terminal does not print [PULSE CONSUMED].

Interaction with difficulty

Merciful difficulty forgives resource margins; Extinction compresses positive biomass turns. Ironman deletes the save on colony failure—Pulse mistakes become permanent. See difficulty tier list.

Master Pulses and the rest of The Carcass becomes a strategy game instead of a guessing game.

Turn report habit

Screenshot or note turn reports during learning runs. Patterns repeat across biomes even when prose differs.

Deep dive: mastering time

Only next and harvest consume Pulses post-2.0. Everything else waits until you commit. Research finishing unexpectedly means you advanced time unknowingly—watch banners.

Harvest high-danger zones with explicit cost labels. Mini turn reports list biomass, calcium, bile, neuron deltas—if biomass negative twice, emergency harvest.

Batch free actions, single Pulse end. This rhythm separates experts from famine saves.

If research completes unexpectedly, you advanced time unknowingly—watch banners.

Closing tips for tacticians

unexpected research finish means accidental Pulse spent—watch logs.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common questions.

Does building consume a Pulse?

No. Building spends resources. Time advances only when you next or harvest.

Why did research finish unexpectedly?

You likely advanced a Pulse while a project was near completion. Check turn reports.

Can I undo a Pulse?

Not on Ironman. Other modes depend on save settings—save before risky harvests when allowed.
