The Carcass Resource Management Guide

Feed the colony, wall the chambers, and fund forbidden research without starving mid-Pulse.

Resource Management

Every colony inside the carcass runs on four visible currencies: biomass, calcium, bile, and neurons. They map to food, structure, industry, and science. Unlike fantasy RPG mana, these resources come from harvesting living anatomy—and harvesting spends Pulses. This guide explains how to keep all four positive while preparing for mid-game faction taxes and parasite raids.

Resource roles

ResourcePrimary useEarly priority
BiomassFeed citizens, sustain moraleCritical
CalciumBone walls, quarries, fortificationsHigh
BileIndustrial processes, fermentation chainsMedium
NeuronsResearch, occult mutationsMedium ( spikes late )

Harvesting fundamentals

Harvest commands pull yield tables from the active region. Regions differ in danger and composition—deeper anatomy can offer richer neurons at parasite risk.

Steps each Pulse:

  1. Open harvest menu; read Pulse cost and danger label.
  2. Harvest if biomass or build materials are low.
  3. Read mini turn report (Pulse guide).
  4. Adjust building queues in buildings guide.

Never harvest high-danger zones without combat readiness (combat guide).

Early-game economy loop

Pulses 1–15 (demo scale):

  1. Harvest safe biomass until Nutrient Vat construction is possible.
  2. Build Nutrient Vat → converts biomass overhead into stable food margin.
  3. Build Bone Quarry → stabilizes calcium for walls before expanding chambers.
  4. Start one research line aligned with research tier list—usually production or diplomacy first.

If biomass goes negative two Pulses in a row, cancel luxury research and harvest exclusively.

Mid-game shifts

Trade with alien species can import biomass or calcium spikes—see factions guide. Betrayal may close routes, so never rely on a single partner.

Bile becomes critical when forges and altars multiply. Neurons surge when you study forbidden organs instead of consuming them—role-playing choice with mechanical cost.

Neurons vs immediate consumption

Events offer mysterious organs: harvest for resources now or study for neuron floods and lore flags. Study paths unlock mutations (mutations tier list) but delay food fixes. There is no universal correct choice—ending routes differ (endings guide).

Bottleneck troubleshooting

Famine: more Nutrient Vats, safer harvest zones, ration events (citizens).

Construction stalled: Bone Quarries, calcium harvest regions.

Research stalled: assign neuron-positive harvests, build altars when unlocked.

Trade collapse: rebuild trust or pivot to military self-sufficiency.

Pulse efficiency

Batch free actions (build, assign, diplomacy) then spend one harvest Pulse for resources OR next for timed events—not both blindly every turn. Command lookup marks Pulse-consuming commands.

Large colony note

500+ population simulations stress CPU per recommended specs (release info). Resource UI remains textual—discipline matters more at scale.

Resources are the language the carcass speaks. Learn it before the carcass learns your weaknesses.

Neuron spikes

Study organs when neurons lag, harvest when biomass lags. Mixing both on the same Pulse without buffer causes cascade failures.

Deep dive: four currencies

Biomass feeds. Calcium builds. Bile industries. Neurons think. Early demo bottlenecks: food and calcium. Mid: bile. Late: neurons and forbidden costs.

Harvest zones differ by danger and yield. Deep anatomy pays neurons at parasite risk. Trade covers gaps until betrayal.

Closing tips for planners

Four resources, one bottleneck at a time. Fix food before neurons.

Player notes on Resource Management

Veterans recommend revisiting this topic after the 2.0 patch because Pulse labels and harvest menus changed beginner muscle memory. Pair this page with the guides hub when planning multi-run completion. Ironman players should read related controls pages before committing single-save attempts. Document event choices with Pulse numbers when chasing secret endings or NG+ memory flags. Trade reliance fails after betrayal—internal Nutrient Vats remain the reliable backbone on Normal and Hard. Extinction difficulty punishes sloppy turn reports; scan biomass every Pulse without exception. Large populations above five hundred citizens require recommended PC specs listed on release info.

Closing tips for planners

one bottleneck at a time—food, walls, neurons. Cross-link colony resources for structure focus.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common questions.

Which resource runs out first?

Biomass in most demo runs until Nutrient Vats come online.

Can I trade all resources?

Faction trade covers key goods but varies by species and reputation.

Do resources carry in NG+?

Victory metadata carries—not full stockpiles. See New Game Plus guide.
